Fashion Design 1:  Basic Sewing Skills

 Materials for Fall, 2013 are due in to class by October 3, 2013


Dear Parents:

            Your student will be responsible for making three sewing projects in this semester class.  The first project will be a zipper case and the teacher will provide materials for that one.  Project #2 is a pillow case and Project #3 is a pair of shorts.  Each student is responsible for purchasing materials for these projects and bringing them into the classroom.  Below you will find a list of items needed.  Every effort has been made to make these projects affordable.  If you have concerns about acquiring the materials, please call me at 301-513-5700, ext 3047 or email me at susan.baudoin@pgcps.org.



1 Sewing Kit that includes shears, pins, pin cushion, seam ripper, tracing wheel, and tracing paper.  You may purchase these items individually or in a kit.

Shorts:          

     1 and ½ yards of cotton or cotton/polyester blend fabric, flannel is a great choice. (please do not buy stretch knits!)  For knee-length shorts – please buy 2 yards!
    1 package of 1inch wide elastic
    1 large spool of thread whose color matches the fabric.  The spool MUST say ALL PURPOSE on the end!

Pillow Case

    ¾ of a yard of fabric for pillowcase
    1/3 of a yard of fabric for the border of the pillowcase

Where to go:

      Joann Fabrics (Beltway Plaza):  Please check for coupons, either online or in the store.  They have great holiday sales also.



Some WalMart stores carry a limited selection of fabric.  Try it!!  The sewing kits are cheaper at WalMart.



PLEASE BE SURE THAT THE SEWING THREAD YOU BUY SAYS ALL PURPOSE ON THE END OF THE SPOOL!!!



Check out the bargain section of the fabric store.  Fabric is sold by the yard, so the price will reflect how much you will pay per yard of fabric.  Some fabrics are as little as $2.00 per yard, others will be as much as $8.00 or more per yard.  Your total cost for the projects will be determined by how expensive your fabrics are.   If you shop the sale fabrics, you can purchase what you need for around 20.00.
