Hooks & Eyes are the most basic of fasteners.

Hooks & Eyes are the most basic of fasteners.

They are used on skirts, dresses
and accessories. So it is a very handy skill to know how they are attached.
Technique Tutorial
How to Sew any size
Hand Sewing Needle, any style – Size 5 – 10
Thread to match your project
Scissors
Optional: Straight Pin to mark placement – any style pin
Pass needle under the hook and top
layer of fabric toward the wire loops.
The needle should exit up through
the loop.
When attaching the hook and eye, use small
stitches, catching only a few fabric threads at
a time. Stitches should not show on the
outside of the garment. Check the outside of
the garment as you sew!

2.
Take two stitches
across the neck
of the hook to secure.
To hide the knot, place your first
stitch under the hook or in an area
that doesn’t show.
TIP
TIP
Thread your needle with a single thread,
pulled so ends are the same length. Knot
the ends together for a double sewing thread.

1. Choose placement so hook & eye
are not visible. Hold in place
with straight pins. Then stitch as
noted in following steps.

3.
To secure stitching,
always take 2-3 tiny
stitches under or very
close to the hook to
prevent stitches from
coming loose.
Take small stitches
over the looped
wire of the hook.

YOUR MASTERPIECE!

D-STYLE EYE

EYES: There are two styles of eyes included with most sets of hook and eyes –
a straight-style and a D-shaped style. Choose which is best for your garment.
The straight style works best where there is only a small strip of fabric, such as at
the neckline of a zippered dress. The D-shape works where there is more overlap
and it can be secured without showing.
To attach either style, sew small stitches over the wire at the loop holes as in the diagram
below. When complete be sure to take 2-3 stitches to secure as you did with the hook!

Be Crafty.
NOTE: There are many different styles of hooks and eyes – fur hooks and pant hooks
to name two. While attachment is similar, the hooks have a different appearance. Look
for future tutorials with more details!
