Crafting is the art of creating new things from all sorts of materials by using a wide range of techniques and tools. There are many kinds of crafts which are used to create various kinds of objects that have a decorative or practical value, or both. For that reason crafts can be divided into decorative and functional crafts according to the use of the final product but they are typically divided into different types of crafts according to materials that are used to create new items.

Crafts involving the use of wood, metal and clay are probably the best known type of crafts. All have been practised for thousands of years because they can be used to create just about anything. Examples of crafts involving the use of wood, metal and pottery include carpentry, furniture making, wood turning, wood burning, sculpture, pottery, jewellery, marquetry, metalworking and chip carving. Each of the mentioned types of crafts requires special skills and use of special tools and techniques.

Crafts involving textiles are just as old as crafts involving the use of wood, metal and pottery, and can have both decorative and functional value. Examples include weaving, sewing, needlepoint, quilting, embroidery, string art, spinning, cross-stitch, knitting, rug making, tapestry, canvas work and banner-making.

Then there are crafts that involve the use of paper and canvas which are further subdivided into bookbinding, calligraphy, card modelling or paper-craft, papier-mache, altered book, embossing, marbling, iris folding, etc. Most people are also familiar with origami, a Japanese folk art characterized by paper folding into paper sculptures without the use of scissors and glue that became very popular throughout the world in the 1990’s. It typically involves folding of square paper although the traditional Japanese technique was less strict about the shape of the paper and sometimes also involved cutting.

Very popular are also crafts that involve the use of plants which have primarily decorative purpose. Examples include floral design, basket weaving and straw marquetry. Floral design can be further subdivided into flower bouquet, boutonniere, ikebana, wreath and garland. Straw marquetry is almost identical to marquetry involving the use of wood except that the wood is replaced by straw.

In addition to the above mentioned crafts, there is a long list of crafts that involve the use of other materials including glass, stone, plastic, etc. Recently have also become popular crafts that involve the use of waste material.

Another type of crafts are the so-called functional crafts which may involve the use of just about any material and are characterized by being both decorative and useful. One of the best examples of functional crafts is pottery that is highly decorative and can be used for various kinds of purposes such as flowerpots and kitchen utensils, for instance. Decorative crafts, on the other hand, are primarily valued for their aesthetic value and have a decorative function only.

In recent years have also become increasingly popular crafts for kids which – like their name suggests are intended for kids. They have two purposes. Firstly, to entertain the kids and secondly, to stimulate development of children’s cognitive as well as physical skills.
