a pair of shoes is/are? |
is shoes - As far as I know 'a pair of jeans is a good present', how about a pair of shoes? A pair of shoes are or is a good present?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Garbuz,
You're right, pair is singular, and a pair of jeans is a good present. A pair of shoes is a good present.
The standard plural of pair is pairs. Some English users say pair as plural, but that is nonstandard. I bought two pairs of shoes and a pair of scissors.
I have read somewhere that both two pairs of shoes and two pair of shoes are correct, and only the first one is more common.
Am I incorrect?
a. Two pairs of shoes are full of holes. b. Two pair of shoes are full of holes.
I'd consider 'two pair of shoes' non-standard.
I agree - non-standard but pretty common, particularly in conversation.
