Talking Shirt with Matt Singer

It would be hard to label Matt Singer just a designer. The man behind his eponymous label does much more than create updated classic American menswear and accessories; he curates a unique world of goods that’s cool and clever (astronaut dog piñata anyone?) but still familiar to the average gent. For Spring 2013 Singer is rolling out a capsule of popovers that pull inspiration from classic Hawaiian shirts, but modified for the Matt Singer man.

GQ: What inspired the popovers?

Matt Singer: I really love what Robin Williams wore in Good Morning Vietnam, that cool tropical vibe meets ham radio operator. That’s the feeling I was trying to capture. I’ve always appreciated the fabric designs of old Hawaiian shirts but have had trouble finding patterned shirts that were both casual and refined. I love the mix of those two things.

GQ: The popover shirt can be a pretty divisive silhouette for guys - some love it, some hate it - what do you like about it?

Singer: I think the popover is great shape when the proportions are done right and it allows you to look completely casual without becoming sloppy. My shirts have some really nice detailing in the pocket and collar and feature a curved hem along the bottom so if worn untucked it still looks clean. There’s room enough throughout the chest to be comfortable without feeling blousey.

GQ: What was the process like for picking out the prints you used? Were they based on vintage patterns?

Singer: I got really inspired by an amazing book by Thomas Steels called The Hawaiian Shirt and worked hard to find patterns that were reminiscent of that hand painted style.

GQ: How do you see a guy wearing these this summer?

Singer: The shirts work well with pants or shorts, I really like the shirts when worn with a slightly dressier tropical weight wool pant. It’s easier to make patterned shirts feel casual, I like the tension between the casual and the refined.

GQ: Your brand is such an eclectic mix of clothing designed by you, vintage items, accessories - how would you sum up the Matt Singer brand?

Singer: My brand is a pretty honest reflection of who I am, American, casual, friendly and a little bit goofy. My approach is a bit different--with the product I develop and the overall ideas that I am trying to share with my brand--it’s storytelling through product--I work very hard to create products that might become somebody’s favorite whether it’s a button down shirt or leather travel wallet or beaded keychain.
