GRADUATE FASHION WEEK TRULY IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SPOT UNDISCOVERED NEW FASHION TALENT

With an incredible alumni, holding some of the most influential positions at fashion houses and super-brands across the world, Graduate Fashion Week has cemented its position as the definitive place to spot the hottest young fashion and design talent around. It’s the looking glass into the future of fashion, celebrating the work of more than 1000 of the finest fashion BA Degree students graduating from Member Universities across the UK for the biggest showcase of young talent in the world.
Sponsored by George at Asda, Graduate Fashion Week is the annual five-day event that features the very best of up-and-coming British fashion talent. GFW - now in its 20th year - has given promising graduates the unique opportunity to showcase their work, be it design or media and marketing, in front of industry professionals. In recent years, these have included Claudia Schiffer, Agyness Deyn, Henry Holland, Julien Macdonald, Alber Elbaz of LANVIN, Victoria Beckham, Stefano Pilati, YSL, Gareth Pugh and Glenda Bailey, Harpers USA.

Over the years Graduate Fashion Week has launched the careers of such brilliant British designers as Stella McCartney, Julien MacDonald, Antonio Berardi, Christopher Bailey, Stuart Vevers, Hussein Chalayan and Owen Gastor to name but a few!

And who knows, someone spotted at GFW might soon follow in the footsteps of Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, the very first GFW winner.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Until 1991 there was no comprehensive catwalk schedule amongst the UK’s leading fashion colleges. Shows took place over four weeks across the country with no synergy or focal point.

Realising that there was a real need for change, a number of college heads approached various people within the fashion industry for their help.

Four people took up the challenge – Jeff Banks, Caryn Franklin, Vanessa Denza and John Walford. Unequivocally they offered their professional support and commitment to fashion education, and together hatched a plan to create an event with a static exhibition and professional catwalk, which would enable the colleges to participate on an equal basis.

The event has grown considerably since the beginning and is now staged at the iconic Earls Court complex, home to such events as the Brit Awards, as well as a host of concerts for stars such as the Kaiser Chiefs, Madonna, and Justin Timberlake.
